Happy 2020 friends!
I don’t like the phrase New Year, New You because.. you are already great! The new decade and new year is an opportunity to reflect on yourself, your habits, and decide how to improve yourself and grow into YOUR BEST SELF!
Most New Year Resolutions are scraped and given up on by the end of every February. That’s not even two whole months before people get frustrated and lose sight of that goal they were so excited to set to better themselves. But why? Maybe, just maybe.. their goal was too big. Or more likely, the goal was on target, but they didn’t know how to break it into easier, more manageable chunks to achieve their goals.
Instead of setting crazy, new, lofty goals way out of sight, first reflect on your previous years’ goals. Which ones did you achieve, did not achieve, and why? If there is a goal you haven’t achieved, think about the barriers that were in the way and what prevented you from achieving that goal. Fine tune that goal before just tossing it out for the next year.
Before setting new goals, reflect on the ones you have not achieved yet and why? Eliminate barriers and create better, smaller action steps to get you to achieve the goal!
Its easy to set one large goal by saying you want to lose 20 pounds or get healthier but there are many smaller steps you need to do every day, week, and month to get to that big goal. The more concrete and observable you can craft the goal to be, the easier it will be to measure growth towards and ultimately achieve it. Think about the action steps you will need to do to reach that bigger goal.
For example, for one of my health and wellness goal, I want to lose 15 more pounds in 2020. Here is how to map the goal out:
- Health and Wellness Goals
- Lose 15 pounds
- Work out 3x per week at the gym
- Run 4x a week
- Log food into WW app every day
- Cook 4 healthy dinners a week
- Look up WW Recipes and order ingredients for 4 days at a time for grocery pickup
- Use Fitbit to track exercise
- Lose 15 pounds
This might seem excessive, but marking down everything you can possibly do to help you achieve your goal will be helpful. This way you can return to this list and see where you are hitting the mark and where you can do better. For me, I always try to look up recipes and order food for grocery pickup but I usually forget. Then, I put myself in the position to have to tote our 3 young boys through the grocery store while hungry. You know what it is like to bring 3 children to the grocery store with Frozen and Superheros splattered on all of the unhealthy food options! I also grab so many items that weren’t on the list that just take up space in my pantry, rot in my fridge, or fill my belly with unhealthiness….
The template below has 4 main categories that I like to set goals in for the year. If you use this template, do not skip over the wellness section. It has taken me a long time to realize that self care is NOT selfish. I have a friend who told me the analogy of yourself and a vase or pitcher.
Think of yourself as a vase or pitcher. If your vase is empty, you cannot fill other people’s cups. Fill your vase or pitcher up first so you can fill other people’s cups as well. If your cup is overflowing, you can easily fill others. If your vase is empty, it will be impossible to fill other people up.
Mothers always put their family’s needs first and often neglect their own personal care, hobbies, goals, and time. If this resonates with you too, make sure you set wellness and self care goals to make sure you are your best self for you and your family.
Below is an easy goal sheet you can download and modify to fit your needs. My husband and I like to post our goals in a visible place where you can always see, read, and be reminded of them!
I hope this post and goal sheet helps you set lofty AND attainable goals for this new year and decade!
